IIDD, Chill November: Tuesday, November 20th

Mere parsimony is not economy. Expense, and great expense, may be an essential part in true economy. -Edmund Burke, statesman and writer (1729-1797)

Constable Oliver's Funeral

Hi Titanium Man, et al!

Appreciate that fact that you reminded me about the sale of the Balvenie Fifty as I was so engrossed in finishing Thinking Fast and Slow that the event had completely slipped my lazy System 2 mind, overwhelmed by either an availability cascade or a lack of diagnosticity of evidence. Nevertheless, nudged by your message, I made my way to the Cambie Street liquor store and was able to overcome malt master David Stewart’s firmly entrenched endowment effect and was able to pry the bottle from his iron grip, believing the pundits' completely non-regressive predictions about the taste of the malt to feed my remembering self's illusion of validity concerning future pleasure. I was able to pay the exorbitant fee anticipating the hefty fines to be levied, at the next gathering of the NRBC, against those members who have not read or finished the book. I suspect the majority. The few disciplined lads will, of course, share in a teaspoon of the elixir. I can only trust that the true non-readers will somehow be able to inoculate themselves against overwhelming regret when they struggle with the particular hell of their own personal hindsight bias. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hi Elaine and Ted!

Great that we can finally manage to get together! Some koubassa from Winnipeg would be more than divine! Thanks!

What time would you like to start, given Ted's "condition". I gather he will be having a new cast earlier that day so not sure if that will affect his mobility, at least initially. Anyway, let me know what you think and I'll make sure we have a parking spot free before you come.

Enjoy White Christmas while you can, Elaine. Cheers, Patrizzio!

In Ukraine "kovbasa" is properly pronounced [kowbɑˈsɑ], but in English is usually pronounced /ˈkʌbəs
Hi I am in town this week, are you around?

Hi Ski!

Thanks for the advance warning! Nevertheless, we'd love to see you. Is your number local? Otherwise I need to know the area code if it is not 604! Cheers, Patrizzio!

We need to insist on adding maltridatism to Wordsmith lexicon. The word has variations with alcohol content. W

Mithridatism:

The developing of immunity to a poison by taking gradually increasing doses of it. After Mithridates VI, king of Pontus (now in Turkey) 120-63 BCE, who is said to have acquired immunity to poison by ingesting gradually larger doses of it.Mithridates VI's father was poisoned. No wonder VI wanted to develop tolerance to poison. The story goes that after VI's defeat by Pompey, he didn't want to be captured alive. So he tried to end his life by taking poison. That didn't work, so he had a servant stab him with a sword.

 Hi Giggster!

Thanks for the Krankneheimer's phone number. He and Naughty Nancy will be joining us for bridge so pleased that some of the NRBC'ers are interested in honing their bidding skills!

With respect to the "isms' above, I have always thought that they were interchangeable, if not synonymous or even toponymous, since one if often asked, "What is your choice of poison?", when attending a high brow do or other glitzy gathering. Furthermore, the more malt one imbibes the more immune, (certainly not "stunned"), one becomes to increasing dosages. I trust this sets your naming disorder straight, Bob! Cheers and Here's Looking in Your Bloodshot Eye, Mithridates XIII!

P,

thanks for thinking of us. We would love to join you but have other commitments for Thursday.

I look forward to hearing about your interview with Gion. W

Hey Patrizio!

Thanks so much for the invite, however at a travel trade show that evening. Charlie

Hi Charlie, once again we need travel insurance. For Patrick and I and for mom and dad.
They are away 15 days and we are gone for about 60. Thanks Corinne
Hi Champagne and O Susannah!

Too, too bad that you cannot join us! We are more than disappointed as we will be playing for a $/point as we need the winnings to pay for the more than expensive travel insurance our supposed "friends" are soaking us for!

O Susannah mentioned, in her phone message, that you might be by Granville Island this weekend. If so, please pop by for a java. You can drop off the medical questionnaires then or else just mail them to our address. Rosita and Coat Hanger use our mailbox so the address is the same. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patrizio!

Nancy and I are delighted by your bridge invite.  She'll pick me up after my meeting and we'll head to your place shortly after 7. See you Thursday, Guy

Hi Kids!

Sounds great! See you whenever you make it. Don't worry about duration neglect! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Thanks for the pictures and yes we hope to be at yours at the appointed hour Catherine

Hi Patrick
Just picked up a fresh koubassa to bring. Does 5:30 work?
It was +2 today so it looks like the start of spring - very dirty snow. Cheers Elaine
Hi Koubassa Keating!

Sausage sounds wonderful! Too, too bad about snow. Therw will be plenty of rain here so you needn't worry! I'll have valet parking waiting for you. Just give me a call a few minutes before you will arrive and I'll come out to the garage to let you in. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Glad I managed the outing since it really has been wet almost ever since. Did happen to elude raindrops today when I rode over to the Aquatic Centre at 11:15am this morning. Was able to swim 3.25 miles but not overly pleased with my time, about 1 mph. Hope I can reduce it to 45 minutes once I'm swimming more regularly but that remains to be seen, of course. Back home by 4:00pm after a glorious hot tub and sauna.

We haven't heard much from Kev/Bev either. Not terribly good correspondents in my experience. Last email I sent was to thank them for the terrific meal we had enjoyed on October 30th.
Coramandel and I met, 41 years ago, on Halloween, at Champs Motor Inn on Osborne, in Winnipeg. Since Clara and Dusty, her parents from Winnipeg, were arriving that afternoon, we decided to celebrate a day earlier. We went to Edibles, on Granville Island, one of our favourite spots there. Bev/Kev had given us a generous gift certificate to the restaurant as a thank you for their stay. We had a wonderful meal and all within such easy walking distance!

Two tables of bridge this coming Thursday so should be fun. Corinne's parents play and we are having Ted/Elaine Keating, also from Winnipeg originally. (Ted and I played handball at the U of Wpg and he belonged to VRC for a short while as well.) Guy, (from my book club), and his partner, Nancy, will make up rest.
