IIDD, Moondance: Friday, October 26th

The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life -- the sick, the needy and the handicapped. -Hubert Horatio Humphrey, US Vice President (1911-1978)

Cotehele, Cornwall
Hi Patrick. Well here we are settled back in jolly old England once again and autumn is well and truly here.

Krissy probably mentioned that when we arrived at VCR to book in for our flight home, we were told that they couldn't assign us a seat since Virgin Atlantic had overbooked the plane. We were told that a seat would be allocated prior to boarding the aircraft. In the event they kindly upgraded us to first class! Maybe this is your preferred mode of travel  but it was our first experience of first class air travel. I must say it was a great trip back, from the free champagne, 5 course dinner and complementary pyjamas, to the very comfortable flat beds! I would like to say we will do this more often but unless the lottery comes up this is unlikely to happen!

We drove from Heathrow to Southampton to stay with Marnie for a couple of days. Tristan had a tummy virus so Gayle stayed on for the rest of the week to look after him and I returned to Cornwall. Gayle took the train back. Unfortunately, I ended up catching the bug which laid me low for a few days! Once back to normal spent a few days clearing up the garden - joy! Have not been out on the bike since I returned so it is gathering dust in the garden shed!

Yesterday was a very nice day so went to Cotehele, a National Trust property. The house is medieval/Tudor and dates from the 1300's. It was added to in the 1400,s and have remained pretty much the same since then. Inside the walls are adorned with 15th century tapestries, and the rooms full of Tudor furniture and armour. The grounds run to about 1200 acres which includes historical gardens, woodland and farmland. There is a very old coach house on the ancient quay which is now a little cafe where we took lunch before going on a nice long walk in the grounds. Few pictures attached.

Krissy said you entertained the Cotheys while they were visiting. Glad you got to meet them since they only live 15 minutes from us so will be nice for you to catch up with them while you are here.

Had to attend a funeral today of a friend who tragically drowned while surfing off one of our local beaches. Got caught in a rip. Krissy was friends with one of the daughters when they were younger.

Gayle is off to a concert tonight to see a local singer, Seth Lakeman. his genre is sort of folk. I have seen him a few times and, although I enjoy his work, three times is enough for me! Gayle was originally going with Gudrun but, of course, they are in North America. Consequently, Gudrun sold her tickets to some friends.

See the girls are off to Seattle on the weekend. Lets hope they behave themselves!

Trust all is well with you both. Have a good Halloween! Because we do not live around a lot of houses we don,t get any trick or treaters here. Having said that, Gayle always make me carve the pumpkin to put outside and we have a basket of treats, just in case, which I end up eating! Bye for now

Hi Gayle and Derrek!

Trust life in Cornwall goes well. Have been rather busy, of late, with the VIFF and the VWF. The latter ended last Sunday and that evening, as you might already know, we had a lovely dinner with Gudrun and Stefano and Pig on the Street People! Flamin' and Sarge were up as well so it was a grand time. Told G/S not to tell you that we are planning to come for three months, now that we know they are neighbours, not one!!!

You will not believe this but I just received your email! Cora Lee is most envious of your First Class stint as that is certainly not our mode of travel! Sorry to hear about your bug. There has been quite a bit of flu making the rounds here as well. Very sad to learn of your friend's untimely death. Cannot begin to imagine the family's grief. Aside from everything else, it serves to remind us, and painfully so, of course, just how fragile life is.

Cotehele looks magnificent! Is this where we will be staying? And you wonder why we want to be in Cornwall for three months. Now it'll be a year at least! I gather The Young Sisterhood will really be celebrating in Seattle, for many reasons, one quite unexpected. Yesterday, Caroline, the manager who was responsible for the Tap Room and the Retail Outlet at GIB was let go due to "restructuring"! From what I had heard from Chloƫ she was almost criminally incompetent and I could not understand, from my own experience in administration, how management could allow her to remain in the position. One hopes that this change will lead to improved work place morale.

Like you folk, we don't have any Trick or Treaters in our building but Cora Lee already has the appartmento decked with Halloween trimmings/ornaments of one sort or another. Sarah, neighbour down the hall, has a wonderful witch's hat affixed to her door with a grand broomstick leaning near the entrance. Furthermore, have seen many houses decked with quite elaborate decorations on my rides of late. Speaking of which, managed a grand ride yesterday, with Whirlygig, Robo Ray and Big Al. We cycled out to Iona, near YVR, and then they "abandoned" me at 37th and Cypress while I continued out to UBC to follow one of my regular routes around campus and environs. Managed to log 103.3K over 5:33:34, AVG18.5KPH, MAX50.0KPH by the time I was home so was quite pleased with the distance but not the average speed. Like to try to be above 20KPH. However, weather was so gorgeous that I simply didn't want to stop! English Bay was filled with freighters, some of which seemed close enough to touch as I rode along Spanish Banks!

Please say hello to Gudrun and Stefano when you next see them and tell them how much we enjoyed meeting them. All the best to you both from Cora Lee and Chloƫ. Cheers, Patrizzio!

    Dear Patrick,
Thank you for signing our Open Letter to Prime Minister Harper, demanding public debate on FIPA before it is enacted on November 1st.

With less than one week before it's inacted, we must team up to shine the spotlight on this terrible deal before it's too late. Help me gather 30,000 signatures to this letter.

If you haven't yet done so, please share this action with your contacts using our Tell a Friend tool, or send your own email with the link to the action: http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/281/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=11824. If you're a social media user, please spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, or wherever your online community lives.

Thanks, again, for taking action! Stay tuned for more on how, together, we will fight this treaty.

Sincerely,

Clayton Ruby, C.M.

"Countdown to Halloween" starts tonight with 6 nights of fun and fright!

Hi TNT!

Sorry I've taken so long to reply. Thanks for asking about Mom's Memorial.
E
verything went off very well so quite pleased with the Service itself as well as the gathering at the church afterward and then the Wake at our place.

Sorry to hear about your Dad's fall. A very, very difficult time for all concerned, I'm sure. Hope Tina's Mum's house repairs go as smoothly as possible. Picture of campground brought back fond memories of our trip! Glad Tina's knee is doing so well. Unfortunately, Coriandre's foot is still not back to normal and she is to see her specialist on November 2nd. Not sure what can be done, other than time, however.

Furthermore, have seen many houses decked with quite elaborate decorations on my rides of late. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Lads!

You make a more than valid, if inconsequential, nay superfluous point, Raymond! I suppose I'll have to take The Sisterhood along to make sure that my cycling ensemble matches, is completely coordinated!

Glad that you are starting to feel better although the way the tether was stretched, I think you have been dissembling, both about your illness and slow recovery!!!

Having dinner with Kjell and Jane tonight. I was contemplating riding but have to collect Coriandre from VPL where she is working on Friends' book sale until 6:30pm. Otherwise, an up-and-over, in the dark, no less! Do they have police road checks on the LG for cyclists? Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat,
Only in England. Cornwall photos look very pleasant - something to look forward to. Hope to get out next week once the monsoons blow over. Ray
