IIDS, GD: Thursday, August 16th

We are far more concerned about the desecration of the flag than we are about the desecration of our land. -Wendell Berry, farmer and author (b. 1934)

Trying to confirm if you are going to curl this year. Wayne

Hi Sarge:

What with Christmas in LA, possibly Panama or Mexico after than in Jan/Feb, I don't think so. Thanks for asking, however. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Well Mr. Obsession (note lack of quotes),

Foist, graçias por the Wikipedia analysis on which I make the following caveat.  There is no scientific reason that a 2 hour ride would use more energy than 2 one hour rides.  If you cycle up a hill, you lift a certain weight a certain vertical distance.  Doing it faster uses more energey but for a shorter time so the end result is about the same (taking out the factor of the static energy required not to roll backwards).  Sustained effort has other drains on the human body, but that's a different issue.  Perhaps, one of the drawbacks of tired muscles is that it makes them even less efficient, thus more energy is wasted.  A compelling argument for latte breaks!

I did not mean to imply you do not enjoy your rides, I just suggest you try coming over to the Dark Side once in a while.  I challenge you to leave your odometer at home, join me for a Richmond tour - a mere 40K or so, stop at red lights with your foot on the burning ground and chat while waiting for the green, perhaps stop by the river to watch the boats for a while, stop for a latte in Steveston, return home with no dipsy doodling, no idea of *exact* distance, forget the "33" nonsense, … HA! bet you can't.

 Hi Darth Vader!

Glorious morning here. Stayed overnight with Cora Lee's niece, Marlo, and her husband, Ryan, together with their two children, Emmett, 4, and Quinn, his sister, 18 months, just now walking. Quite a three-ringed circus, as you can well imagine, what with two miniature Schnauzers, Nixon and Lucy, thrown into the mix! Dinner consisted of a selection of unbelievable garlic sausages from Tenderloin Meat & Sausage, located in Winnipeg's North End, (Have a ring of coarse Kubassa to take back to Falcon when we return later this afternoon.), and scrumptious, local corn-on-the-cob.

You will be pleased to know that I have begun to wean myself away from extended rides by doing but a paltry 51.3K yesterday, (AVG 20.7kph, MAX 41.4kph over 2:28:18), out and around U of Manitoba campus, taking in the yet to be completed new Blue Bomber Stadium. Then back along Pembina Highway where the wind was so strong that I literally had to stand up to pedal against the tornado force wind which blew my front wheel sideways at times. Once along South Road which follows the Red River I was somewhat shielded from the wind so was able to enjoy the scenic drive. I had a momentary relapse when I was tempted to put my feet on the burning ground when I passed the Bridge Drive Inn, an iconic Winnipeg ice-cream outlet, on Jubilee, (near a no longer used vehicle bridge, now for pedestrians and bikes only), but before I could do so I realized that the fiery surface would melt my cone so I sped towards home, shaking violently, heart pounding, at the near miss! At least the impulse was there. One small, "virtual" step for Man, so to speak! At this rate, I should be able to go "cold turkey" out to Steveston to accept your challenge. What are the stakes? Expensive malt? Bourbon?

Furthermore, for lunch we went to Boon Burger Cafe, a newly opened, second outlet in the so-called Exchange District in downtown Winnipeg, owned by Chloë's close friends, Tomas and Anneen. Does this count as a "stop" even though I had already had a shower, changed and left my bike at home? Vegan fare, delicious. I begin to understand how this latte/lunch scene is so alluring/appealing!

I was up at 6:30am to visit with Famiglia Jurkowski before they left for child care/work at 7:00am. As soon as finish my "confession" I'll wake Her Majesty. We are meeting a very dear friend, Noreen, (Maya's grandmother if you have met Chloë's friend at our place), for lunch. Have reservations at the the Peasant Cookery, apparently one of the top restaurants in Winnipeg. Carly, Marlo's sister, is the Assistant Manager there and, coincidentally, this French bistro is but a block or two away from the BBC, north across Portage Avenue, both on the same street, Bannatyne. And you wonder why I need to cycle hundreds of kilometres!!!

The gauntlet has been thrown! I accept your stinkin' challenge. I'm sure I can out drink you under the table with latte after latte and still keep my feet firmly planted on the ground! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
Hi Eva and John!

thanks for that Pat,

we had a great time as well & we only "step out" socially but 3 or 4 times a year, (christmas, new years eve, halloween & yesterday).
except again for today where we enjoyed a fine visit w/ MM, (Mary Magdalen) a Christian Orthodox cloistered nun who evidently knew & loved my father & her sister Bobbie who i've known since i studied architectural design back in the '60's.

again, we enjoyed your visit & are glad you took the time & cared to visit w/ us.

here's something to help keep you warm, if not dry & you don't have to ride a bicycle to get the job done.
you must have already heard "the be good tanyas".
they're from vancouver.
this tune was written by neil young, very lately out of winnipeg.
talk w/ you soon. zorba the freak.

 Yassou, Zorba The Freak!!

Am listening to The Be Good Tanyas as I scribe! Thanks for clip!! Would MM approve? Am quite fond of their material as well.

Any chance, when you have a minute, that you could send along recipes for lemon potatoesa and Vietnamese java? Would be much appreciated. Thanks again for terrific visit. Fondestos and Cheers to one and all, Patrizzio!

 Hi George!

Thanks for Ryan's phone number. (Marlo spent quite a bit of time, after dinner and E/Q were in bed, trying to get her new Blackberry set up!) See you later today. Cheers, Patrizzio!

They have managed to figure out how to ride a two wheel bike!  Unfortunately starting and stopping and braking down hill are still in progress :)

Thought you might enjoy this video of my bikers!

Take care, Ariane

Prospective 2012 Distribution volunteers!

Good news....the program guide for our 2012 festival (16-21 October) has arrived!
We need volunteers starting NOW to deliver program guides throughout Metro Vancouver.
If you can take responsibility for keeping a route stocked between now and the end of the Festival,  please contact me as soon as possible!
A minimum of 15-20 hours is expected.
Tell me where you live or work  --  we can assign you a route.
Qualifications:
*You must able to lift and carry 5-10 kg and walk short distances as necessary

*Must be able to work independently. Fluency in English is an asset.

*Use of car is helpful, but delivery by bicycle and/or on foot are possible as well.

Scheduling priority will be given to returning volunteers, and new volunteers will be assigned to remaining routes.
It's a great way to get in the door as a volunteer before the festival begins and to free up your time Festival Week to see events!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi Kathryn!

Trust you are well. Cora Lee is pleased to help with program delivery on GI, (or any other pre-Festival tasks as well), so if you'd like us to do that again let us know. We should be available by Monday, August 27th. Hello to rest of VIWF gang. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Many of you know that Mike and I have different email addresses.  But I always forward pertinent messages to him.
For those of you who don't know.
Marilyn's primary address (for people who want to correspond w. a responsible person) is: XXX
Mike's address (for those of you who don't mind having your message lost with 100 others in his in-box) is YYY
If in doubt about our receiving your message, it would be wise to send it to both addresses.
Then I can employ my nagging "I told you so" behavior whenever Mike doesn't remember getting your message. Happy summer. Marilyn

Hi Fingare and Digitale!
How lovely to hear from you! Or at least from a "responsible" person!!! Trust you are both fine.Looking forward to Christmas, we are house-sitting for a cousin of Ayn's, in Simi Valley, for two weeks. Will be driving down with Clarisse and Dusty so if you are up for an "invasion" let us know. Hope to spend about six weeks in Panama after that, from about January 20th to end of February. Not sure if C/D will join us for that junket, however. Anyway, will chat before then. Fondestos to you both from Coriandre, Rosita and Coat Hanger! Cheers, Patrizzio!
