Arguments over grammar and style are often as fierce as those over Windows versus Mac, and as fruitless as Coke versus Pepsi and boxers versus briefs. -Jack Lynch, English professor, author (b. 1967)

Hi, babies are 11 days old, very tiny and needing lots of small feedings
often.  It's a little difficult to get good sleep but not too hectic a
schedule.

I'm missing everyone at home but having a wonderful grand mama time!

Cheers to all. Joanne.

Hi Grand Mama!

Sounds like you are pretty busy with the eleven day old twins! Had a wonderful dinner last night, with Flamin' and Sarge, at the home of Brenda and Dave, curling mates. They are from Winnipeg, originally, and Brenda was head of HR at VPL for a number of years, which is where she and Cora Lee first met. They live on 1st near Collingwood so we didn't have far to go. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Misha is their Cocker Spaniel! Taken just before we drove home.

Hi Brenda and Dave and Tess and Misha!

Just a quick note to thank you for the wonderful, wonderful dinner and most enjoyable evening. It was terrific to see you three again and to meet Misha. What a great pooch!!! I trust we will see all of you again in the not too, too distant future. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hey pat

So we want to begin with a toast to Bella and a prayer to bless the food

 John Donne

HOLY SONNETS.

XIV.

Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; for you
As yet but knock ; breathe, shine, and seek to mend ;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

'No Man is an Island'

MEDITATION XVII Devotions upon Emergent Occasions John Donne

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Olde English Version
No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man
is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;

well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine
owne were; any mans death diminishes me,
because I am involved in Mankinde;
And therefore never send to know for whom

Hi Lurch and Grogg!

Great to see Lurch, if only for the evening, last Thursday. Thanks for lovely bottles of wine! Thanks as well for the wonderful tastings just before we left Madroña Manor.

Have been busy with VIFF first two days back and then on Saturday Chloë and I had to take Maggster to the SPCA for a check-up. We were worried about her teeth and her stomach as she had been sick to her stomach a number of times over last few months. In fact, everything went well from the very beginning. Didn't have too, too much trouble getting her into the carrier cage. Was more concerned about that than almost anything else! She can be pretty vicious when unhappy, as I'm sure you know! Anyway, vet said she was pretty healthy and only suggested we try a special diet to help reduce plaque build-up on her teeth. Couldn't believe how relaxed she was while being examined! Poor Chloë was probably more nervous than Maggie as she ended up spilling quite a bit of the container of crunchies she'd brought along to try to take The Devil Cat's attention off what was happening around her. Lid wasn't on properly, I guess. Vet was completely unperturbed by spillage. Very, very pleasant, friendly chap.

Then, once out in the waiting area to have detailed report, Chloë knocked over a plastic picture frame containing snap of a cat up for adoption, while attempting to put a donation in the jar beside the picture. The ensuing fall broke one corner of the frame. Coincidentally, just that morning I had put together almost a box of similar frames when I had removed the pictures, originally displayed in Mom's room at Broadway Lodge, ones I wanted to use for the Memorial. Anyway, will drop most of them off at the SPCA next time I'm by there.

Then, spent quite a bit of the afternoon with Flash, at his studio, but a block from Gourmet Warehouse, working on the program/order of service for Mom's Memorial. He is such a wizard with scanning pictures I provided and Photoshop that he was able to produce what we think is a very fitting and appropriate document. I'll send along a copy once we've met with minister to confirm some of the items in the service. I stopped at Legacy, in Olympic Village, on way home, (I was on my bike as it was another glorious day.), and picked up a bottle of 15 year old Mortlach, Speyside, 43%, for Flash as but a small thank-you for all his incredible work. I've not seen Mortlach in years so was delighted to find it on the shelf this time. Picked up a bottle for myself so am looking forward to a snort, perhaps when you come over for Memorial!

That evening had a wonderful dinner, along with Flamin' and Sarge, at the home of Brenda and Dave, curling mates. They are from Winnipeg, originally, and Brenda was head of HR at VPL for a number of years, which is where she and Cora Lee first met. They live on 1st near Collingwood so we didn't have far to go. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Great wine that Lurch brought. As I told her, we had had it, (not sure if it was the same vintage, of course), at a tiny spot, just around the corner from our appartmento, in Paris, in 2010; Grogg after too, too much Grange! Misha is their Cocker Spaniel! Taken just before we drove home.

Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. -Susan Ertz, author (1894-1985)

Hi Flash!

Thanks for the quick work indeed. I probably should have mentioned it earlier but I was thinking of the 11x17, folded, with the order of service, readings, etc., as an insert. I'm wondering if, when we meet, with other pictures and text of order of service, we can "play a bit with various formats, to see what might work best.

As soon as I send this message I'm going next door to The Annexe where we have been storing most of Mom's possessions, to look for a few more pictures. If you could let me know when you might be free to work on format, etc., we can plan accordingly. Thanks again. Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: Lurchesca was gone by the time I read your message so I'll let them know when next I talk to Madroña Manor. Grogg and Tony da Lip will be playing one of Mom's favourite songs, Before I Met You, at the memorial.

Hi Misha!

I haven't actually quite finished the book, (contrary to what Whirlygig, Club Secretary and Agent Provacateur, wrote!), but plan to do so by the end of this weekend. I'm happy to pop it by your place, at some point, or leave it with Giorgio or have you pick it up here if you happen to be coming this way sometime. Whatever is easiest for everyone involved in the exchange! My book for a bottle of the finest Russian vodka, three first editions of Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov's Машенька, Король, дама, валет, Защита Лужина, and a used Kalashnikov! I'll send you a message when I'm ready, written in invisible ink. I might well finish it this evening as Cora Lee is out with a friend, Agneta, who is leaving for Mexico tomorrow, for six months. If I don't attend some of the VIFF showings tonight, I'll be devouring David Adams Richards, probably with Maggie on my lap and a bottle of malt beside me! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Gran Duggaccio!

On Wednesday I rode from Parksville to Departure Bay, (35K), and then from Horseshoe Bay to The Islay Inn, (36K), so it was another grand ride. Found that the return from HB was far easier than in the past and I assume it has to do with the distances I was able to log during our stay on VI. Was a beautiful day, sunny but not overly warm, so rides were most pleasant indeed. Funnily enough, I chatted with a chap at Departure Bay while we were waiting to board the ferry. he was carrying a small, surfing kayak and I asked him about the sport. One thing led to another and I determined he lived in Kamloops and knows a close friend of ours, David McDougall, (He lived with us while attending Law School at UBC back in 1976/77), as he, Sheldon Shore, (kayaker), lives with an ex-girlfriend of Dave's! More to the cycling point is that he and his girlfriend rode in the Penticton Gran Fondo this past July so I was keen to obtain his opinion of route, difficulties, etc. Walking off the ferry at HB we said goodbye and he said that he would look for me in Penticton next year!

Closer to home, I just talked to Imre. There was a message on our voice mail, left by him, while we were away, informing me that had been in St Paul's, (D-10, 604-684-6532, loc 67087) since last Friday, for pain management. He will be discharged on Monday, around noon, and I will collect him and see him home to his apartment. However, he probably won't be staying there for very long as he has reached the point where he simply cannot manage on his own, even with outside help for cleaning, shopping, meal preparation, bathing and the like. One of his doctors suggested hospice care and I believe he has resigned himself to this next step. How long it will take to make the necessary arrangements, I don't know, but of course, this is a very difficult time, as I'm sure I need not tell you.

At any rate, just wanted to let you know about his present situation. Will chat more on Sunday. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Just an FYI in case you haven't got one; you can get a free map from Translink with the included [?] promo code MAP12 at:

:^) cheers, Mark

Hi Marcus Aurelius!

Glad to hear, via Whrlygig, that your back isn't bothering you. Thanks for the cycling map info and the "photogenic" advice! I'll keep it in mind on my next photo-odyssey/bike marathon!

We came back from VI this past Wednesday and I rode from Parksville to Departure Bay, (35K), and then from Horseshoe Bay to The Islay Inn, (36K), so it was another grand ride. Found that the return from HB was far easier than in the past and I assume it has to do with the distances/long grinding hills I was able to log/encounter during our stay on VI. Was a beautiful day, sunny but not overly warm, so rides were most pleasant indeed. Funnily enough, I chatted with a chap at Departure Bay while we were waiting to board the ferry. He was carrying a small, surfing kayak, (He'd been at Tofino for a few days., 7'-14' waves, at times, and he said he and his freinds looke for a sheltered bay where the breakers were between 7'-8'!), and I asked him about the sport. One thing led to another and I determined he lived in Kamloops and knows a close friend of ours, David McDougall, (He lived with us while attending Law School at UBC back in 1976/77), as he, Sheldon Shore, (kayaker), lives with an ex-girlfriend of Dave's!  I gather, from the Giggster, once again, that you are wearing your nautical hat for next little while. Trust weather cooperates and that sailing is fair. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Thanks again for the great pictures, we'll have to do it again sometime in Oct or Nov. Joanne

Hi JT!

Congratulations on the new twins! Trust all goes well! We'll have to have next gathering at our place as you'll be too, too exhausted to lift even a little finger!
See you when you return. Fondestos from Cora Lee to you and the grand-twins! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Big Al!

Enjoyed reading about The Wild Ones! More than impressive stats, althought I think our "bug" count was higher coming back from Winnipeg! Furthermore, I didn't think you had that many brains cells in the first place!!!

Yesterday, Robo Ray, Giggenheimer and I rode out to Iona and then back, via CSTB/Heather to 37th and then out to UBC. Raymondo took off down 16th or home but Giorgio and I returned via Spanish Banks as we both wanted to stop at Young Brother's on Broadway for some fruit/vegetables. He watched my bike while I shopped and then he picked up a few items while I stood guard. Left him at 6th and Macdonald and made my way home, via Kits Point. had 63.2K over 3:12:06 for an AVG 19.7kph, MAX 54.6kph so it was a fairly leisurely ride. Not official as I had to touch the ground outside YB!

Had to be home by 12:30pm as I had my first VIFF shift from 2:00pm-7:00pm. Much the same as last year so pretty familiar with tasks, etc. Watched almost all of Museum Hours, Austria/USA, (Had to put up a number of posters about half-way into film but didn't miss but a few minutes.), a simply fascinating story about two people, museum guard, Johann, (Bobby Sommer), and Anne, (Canadian music legend Mary Margaret O'Hara!), who meet in the Breughel room of Vienna's Kunsthistoriches Art Museum.

Overall, a truly remarkable film which explores how art shapes and reflects daily experience, and more, much more, of course. In one startling scene, to say the least, we watch a number of visitors as they view various paintings. The camera moves from details depicted in the works to the viewers themselves and then back to more close-ups, etc. Then, when a number of particular "viewers" are next seen, they are naked, as if we, the audience, possess X-ray vision. The line, of course, between the naked nymphs, cherubs, and bare chested warriors depicted in the breathtaking or gruesome paintings, is blurred, erased, so we must question what is real, what is artifice. A highly provoctive yet immensely effective device, given the context, I must say.

I rode to Pacific Cinémathèque, (Howe and Helmcken), and it was such a gorgeous afternoon that I only needed a short-sleeved shirt. I took along a warmer jacket for ride home but it was not particularly cool when I crossed the Burrard Bridge and still light enough that I really didn't need my halogen, at just after 7:00pm. Hope to take in quite a few more films over next week or so as I don't have another shift until October 5th. However, have to finish working on the order of service for Mom's memorial on October 14th. Friend Flash is helping with template and he leaves for Cuba on October 2nd so we hope to have it pretty well organized by tomorrow afternoon. I'm busy between 8:00am-10:00am, as we are taking Maggie to the SPCA to have her teeth looked at! I'm hoping that Alastair won't be called upon, by Cora Lee, to do memorial programs for both Chloë and I, as we may well be "shredded", attempting to get The Devil Cat into a carrier cage!

Let me know what your schedule might allow and we'll try for a ride, as long as the weather continues to hold. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Tinsel Town!

This from Laury Dahners, childhood family friend from Cyprus, now living in Chapel Hill. His sister Gail, lives on Orcas. I think you may have met them, (Gail/Jack), over the years of living in Oak Harbour but I'm not sure. Entire family has always been highly conservative, Republicans to the core!

"I really liked, Laury

This band sings a version that will knock your socks off ... a Navy vet sings the lead."

 http://www.starspangledbannerchallenge.com/

Aside from anything else, the "navy vet" reminded me to ask you for Melvin's email. UBC's email system changed and I don't have access to my old email address book. He left a very sympathetic voice mail after he learned of Mom's death and I wanted to thank him. Just haven't had time to attend to everything. I'm meeting with Alastair tomorrow to put together order of service for Mom's Memorial. Hello and Fondestos to Los Horridos. Thanks and Love, Dad!

PS: As I was finally going through some of Mom's possessions, (primarily looking for snaps to use in program), from Broadway Lodge, I was wondering if there might be somethings you might wish to have, some small ornaments, pictures, etc. I could take shots of things and you could decide and we could bring any items that you might want down at Christmas. Anyway, let me know. Probably won't have time to itemize things until after VIFF/VIWF are over.

Hi Laury and Nora!

Not sure if you heard from Gail or not but sad to report that Mom died on Wednesday, August 29th, around 1:00pm. All the best. Patrizzio!

Pics: Mom and I this past June. Mom and Dad, in Cyprus, early '50's!

 Hi Flash!

I came across a couple of these snaps so I thought I'd send them along. Cheers, Patrzzio!

These look so great.

-A.

Hi again, Flash!

Glad you like them. Guess I inherited the love of hootch from Mom!!! Cheers, Patrizzio!

IIDD, Try: Thursday, September 27th

Perhaps the best cure for the fear of death is to reflect that life has a beginning as well as an end. There was a time when you were not: that gives us no concern. Why then should it trouble us that a time will come when we shall cease to be? To die is only to be as we were before we were born. -William Hazlitt, essayist (1778-1830)

Hi Flash!

Trust all gores well with you busy household. Sorry I've not sent anything along sooner. No excuses but plenty of reasons!!! A any rate, the text of what I'd like to have on the inside of the program is attached. I assume you can make it fir by adjusting font size, etc. On the outside, I'd like a number of pictures. A number are included but I don't think they will be used. Have sent them along as examples, so we can play with layout, etc. I will have more that will need to be scanned first. I assume that you will be able to do that. Once we have both sides to a certain stage, I think that will end your "responsibility" as I know you are probably even busier getting ready to fly to Cuba!

So, to the second part. Wondering when it might be possible to meet to do a "rough" draft. I'm free, basically, until you leave, with the exception of between 8:00am-10:00am, Saturday morning, when we are taking Maggie to the SPCA to have her teeth looked at! You may be called upon, by Cora Lee, to do memorial programs for both Chloë and I, as we may well be "shredded", attempting to get The Devil Cat into a carrier cage!

Again, I apologize for the "squeeze". However, I don't think it will take all that much time, given your incredible expertise and facility with Photoshop and the like. If possible, given her busy schedule, I'd like Cora Lee along to say "yea" or "nay" about some of the design elements, pictures, etc. I know the two of you have the "eye" for such things. While I might insist on one picture over another, per esempio, I am more than happy to let you two make the final editing decisions.

So let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. I'll be at home most of tomorrow so you can give me a shout or send along an email. Almost forgot, Lurchesca is here for the night and sends along greetings to you and your Hareem!!! We enjoyed a 2004 Grange from Grogg's cellar on Tuesday. Lives of the Rich and Famous!!! Cheers, Patrizzio!

 Hi Pat,
Information received. I don't shove off until Tuesday, first thing, so there is ample time to complete this project. A couple of quick questions - are we looking at a standard 8 1/2x 11 inch page, folded in half, or did you want to do 11x17, folded? Not that it matters but I thought in order to start… Also, did you want to put in an order of service in here? Any prayers, hymns, elegies, pronouncements, etc?

-A.

I'll get cracking. And please give my love to Francesca - we received her anniversary message just as they were steeping on the plane to France, and their post card from the Eiffel Tower.

Hi Pat,
To start, I just dropped the text you wrote into an letter-sized page, figuring you would be able to fold it in half. Obviously on the inside left and on the back of the folded page there is nothing, yet. Let me know what you think about the way the copy you wrote is set . I wonder if it might be a bit dense for one-half of a page - perhaps we should consider a larger page or go for the copy on the entire inside of the page? At any rate, let me know what you think and we can discuss tomorrow. I'm shooting all day but it's a pretty relaxed gig so we can discuss.

-A.

Mark has chosen Thinking, Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman to follow David Adams Richards' River of the Broken Hearted (Pat).

The date of the next gathering will be the evening of Sunday, 28 October, at the Islay Inn.

Misha,

Pat has a copy of the next book – he has finished it. Please contact him. G

Thanks George.

Pat please let me know if I can borrow it and when.

Grazie. Misha

Hi all, please forgive me for this mass email, but I am trying to get everything done before I leave in about half an hour!!!

As many of you know, I have been training to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain.  Several people have indicated an interest in following the walk with me.  Some suggested a blog, but I have no idea how to set that up, so I have settled for public postings on Facebook.  That way, you don't have to "friend" me, although you may still have to create an account.  I am not sure about that part.

Anyway, I thought that I would let you know what I am up to.  If you don't want to follow my progress, I totally understand.  No need to reply to this email either, as I know that you are all busy people.  Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested.

I am flying out to Paris this evening, then taking the train tomorrow to St Jean Pied de Port in the foothills of the Pyrenees.  I start the actual walk on Sunday.  Please see what you can do about arranging sunshine for me. I will be in touch!! Best, Ann

Hi Patricio, et al.

Yes I would have to say that is a very impressive ride as well and congratulations! Clearly there is nothing standing in you way now of partaking in the Gran Fondo or better yet bring on the tour de France!
As for myself, I recently did a ride on two wheels but of the motorized kind.
I went down to Anacortes last weekend on a motorcycle trip (see pics.)as there is an annual event that takes place down there called the Oyster run. I went down with our friend and Jacob’s soccer coach Ivan and a few of his friends We  rented a house for a couple of nights and rode down Friday night and perused the town of Anacortes and it’s bars and then Saturday rode down to the the bottom of Whidbey Island . We arrived back and did more perusing of the town where they were gearing up for the big event on Sunday, there were band stands and beer gardens and many people cruising around on bikes as well as custom cars etc.
Sunday Morning nursing a bit of a hangover we went down to La Conner for brunch ,the weather was beautiful and the scenery was fantastic as we cruised along beside rolling hills and pastures skirting the mountains of Fidalgo island. We then rode back to Anacortes where the Oyster run was now in full swing with hundreds and hundreds of bikes coming into town. They park them all in four rows down the center of Commercial st. which is the main drag downtown. At it’s height around two o clock there had to be no less than ten thousand bikes parked and or cruising around the town .
Interestingly this event started  in 1981 with a group on nine guys going out for the last run of the year and over the years has just grown exponentially to what it is.
It was fun cruising around in a pack and I felt like something out of Rebel with out a cause as we cruised around with little or no muffled exhaust and terrified the locals in Anacortes and up into Bellingham I got a real chuckle out of cruising by and seeing kids covering their ears and cowering in fear as we passed by! For the record, I averaged 140 km/hour over 3.33 hours each way as well as killing 213 bugs and 5,304,333.00 brain cells!

Happy Birthday!!!! Hope Nicole is spoiling you today. Have a good one :)
  • Nicole Marie He's been working all day! But have a nice day planned on Saturday :)
  • Patrick James Dunn For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! Hip Hip Hooray! Cheers Marvinator!!!
  • Marvin Angelo Mercado Thanks pat. Having a nice glass of tantalus Pinot nior as we speak!
  • Patrick James Dunn And to think that Nicole Marie didn't even know what Pinot Noir was or that you even existed but a few years ago! Congratulations again. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Thanks for the birthday love everyone. Finally finished a long day and enjoying some cheese cake (made by Nicole) and a very nice glass of wine!
I really liked,

Hi Ann!

Congratulations on walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain! We know a number of friends who have undertaken the trek so understand some of what it involves. Buona Fortuna! Will be curious to follow your progress.Fondestos from Cora Lee to you and your trekking feet!!! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi, thanks for your email.  I will be away but will have some access to email over this period.  All the best, Ann
