Had the most amazing meal at Vij's on South Granville last night to celebrate Mom's birthday....thanks for treating Poppa

    • Chloe Alexis Dunn mmmm it was so good!!!! thanks Dad

    • Patrick James Dunn Wonderful that Ayn could be here to celebrate Cora Lee's 65th. Even better to have The Original Gang of Four together for such a marvelous celebration. Thanks Sisterhood!!!!

      P,

Thanks for the ride lasterday -- 45.33kms on the ticker when I landed on 2nd Ave. I added another 23.33 kms to that in the evening carrying a weighted squash bag to Evergreen which adds up to about 100.33, the additional tagged on for hardship loss to inferior North Vancouver cheaters, in the blistering heat...

I regret that I cannot join you for a ride today. I am chained to the MT here today and have a blood donation appointment at 3PM with Amira.

Am interested to hear what happened with the test riding of the new steeds.

Night market is out for me tonight after squash tournament absenteeism over the past few days. W

      Hi Patrice,

It was great finally getting out cycling  with you again today. Ihope you had a chance to celebrate Corrine's significant birthday today as well . Something I forgot to mention is that Jesse is playing with his band ,Aviator shades at the backstage lounge tomorrow night. They come on at 11:00 and Colleen and I are going to go down and see them. Maybe we can come by and say hi before we. Go there or perhaps you'd like to join us? .

Let us know what your plans are and maybe we can meet up.

      Hi Stalker Cyclist!

Great that Jesse is playing at The Backstage Lounge. Come over whenever it suits. Ayn is absolutdelighted to see you. She will be out at her Uncle Eric's earlier but will probably be home by 10:00am and will walk over to GI if we have left already. I'll phone later but have to dash now.

    P,

Please give Corinne our belated best wishes for her 65th. I look forward to congratulating her in person.

Frightening story of the wheel hanging off by a thread – a recurring nightmare.

Have a good ride to HB. I play two matches this morning or I might join you.

We would like to meet your friends in Squamish. We have been casually looking at property ourselves in the area and would like to have some contacts on the ground. Also interested in his fish smoking device.

Hope to get some rides in next weekend before we depart to our separate climes. W

Hi Pseudo-Cyclist in Chains and Backyard Gardener!

Mr Potatoe Head knows some of this but I thought I'd fill you, Giggster, in on some of the ride and non-ride related details. This evening, Big Al's son, Jesse, is playing at The Backstage Lounge. Aviator Glasses is the band. Coleen and Al will come over to the Islay Inn, probably after 8:00pm, to have a bit of a visit before we head for venue. Ayn is absolutely delighted to be able to see them. She will be out at her Uncle Eric's earlier but will probably be home by 10:00am and will walk over to GI if we have left already. You folk are more than welcome to join us if you would like to do so. I imagine I will only stay for one set. Bring your earplugs if you decide to attend!

At any rate, weather permitting, hope to ride out to Horseshoe Bay tomorrow afternoon. Cora Lee will meet me, with my vehicle, there and I'll put bike on the rack for trip to Squamish. Will spend night with friends, Ruth and Rick, as it is their annual summer bbq. Again, hope to ride back home, from HB, on Sunday, probably around noon. Let me know if you are interested or able to join one or the other or both proposed rides. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Ayn P

Leaving to go see a band with my parents and Colleen Teahan Waldron and Al ...it's nearly 11pm and way past my bedtime...but when in Canada!

      • Carol Riera Ahhhh, lucky you. Give Colleen and Al a big hug from me and Corinne and Pat, too!

Hi Patrice,

Well glad to hear you're still intact after dodging the potential mechanical melt down! I will talk to Colleen about what time we'll be heading that way and give you a call. We look forward to seeing you all! .

Cheers, Al

Hi Patrick,

Great to see you again today.  I spoke with Andrea and had her take a measurement on the new bike and based what I measured on your old bike the new one is even higher so we might even drop it down a bit.  We will confirm this when you bring your bike in.

I have attatched the layaway for you to look at as well.

It has been fantastic working with you and Ray. Cheers, Sara

Celebrating Dia Del Amigo (Day of the Friend)

As mentioned in a previous blog, July 20th in Argentina is Dia Del Amigo, or “Day of the Friend.” It is a non-official holiday, but is definitely in the running for one of the most festive days of the year. This day has an extremely interesting history.
The first attempt to designate a day for friendship came from Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho in Paraguay in 1958. He wanted the day to celebrate a culture of peace among everyone around the world. July 30th was declared Dia Del Amigo and is still celebrated in Paraguay by friends giving gifts and taking time for each other.
As Enrique Febbraro watched Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins reach the moon on July 20, 1969 he realized the event might have marked the first time all humankind was united. He said, “We were all awaiting the fate of three astronauts. We were friends and they were friends of the universe.” Inspired by the connection he wrote over 1,000 letters to 100 countries around the world asking them to create a day celebrating friendship. While he did receive over 700 responses his idea mainly took off in Argentina.
Today all over the country friends will kick off festivities by going to lunch and possibly never returning to work. It’s a day to let current friends and loved ones know what they mean to you as well as make new friends. Gifts are exchanged. Restaurants have no reservations. The bars are packed. The streets are filled with laughter and excitement with appreciation oozing from everyone.  Feliz dia del amigo!

Dia del Amigo
It is one of the busiest days of the year… no, Christmas hasn’t come early, nor has Thanksgiving been adopted by Argentines. This Friday is Friend’s Day.

It sounds sweet, soppy and like something taken from an episode of Sesame Street, but this is actually one of the biggest days on the Argentine calendar. When the 20 July comes around everyone starts to sweat beneath their collars and start planning for weeks in advance on how to fit their friends in, see them all and not offend anyone. The big day to see your friends is on the actual Dia del Amigo – the 20th – and this is the premium friend slot (reserved only for those that you really, really love), but in a country where people invite on average 500 people to their wedding, you can imagine how many other friends they feel obliged fit into their busy friend week. I have one Mendocino friend who will be celebrating Friend’s Day with a total of 11 friend gatherings spread over 5 days this week… This is not as unusual as you’d think.
There have been many attempts to set up an international Friend’s Day, but no-one (not even Hallmark) quite achieved it. Paraguay was actually the first country to organize a national Friend’s Day and they celebrate it on 30 July. Argentina, just to be different, made theirs 20th July. Why the 20th July you might ask… because that is when we celebrate the Apollo 11 landing. Confused? Yes, me too. But apparently the Dia del Amigo founder, Dr. Enrique Ernesto Febbraro (a professor and general do-gooder) felt that this was a day of international friendship as the moon landing united all mankind. And so he declared it Friend’s Day in 1969 – one small step for man, one giant leap for friendship and drinks promos in bars. It was later legalized as an official day by the Argentine government. So far it is only Uruguay who also celebrate Friend’s Day on 20 July. But you can’t blame Dr Febbraro for not trying – he did send 4000 letters to 100 countries asking them to be part of Friend’s Day too. No-one else really took him up on the offer.
So perhaps if you are reading this from outside Argentina, you could raise a toast with your friends this Friday (maybe it calls for a good Malbec) and give Dr Febbraro a friendly metaphorical pat on the back. If you are however in Argentina, be warned that this Friday night you won’t find a table or stool in any bar or restaurant for love nor money, and the phone lines will have a complete breakdown for the majority of the day.
Feliz Dia del Amigo!
