IIDS: Saturday, July 14th

Thank everyone who calls out your faults, your anger, your impatience, your egotism; do this consciously, voluntarily. -Jean Toomer, poet and novelist (1894-1967)

Hello Famiglia Harkema!

Trust all goes well with last minute packing!

Just a quick note to say that, since you are renting a car, I have arranged for you to park inside our underground parkade, at least for Sunday night. We can arrange parking for the rest of your stay once you arrive. As well, I am "charged" with walking our neighbour's dog, Molly, tomorrow afternoon. We are all at the Van Int Folk Fest this weekend. I will be leaving early to be back at our place to meet you. So leave a message, once you are ready to drive into town. Don't worry if I don't pick up as I might well be outside with Molly for a few minutes. If you do find on-street parking when you arrive you can simply park for a short time and then we will move car.

Follow these instructions to find our patio, if you want to stretch your legs before we connect:

Direzzzzzzzzzzzzione!

Island Inn:  #20-1425 Lamey’s Mill Road, 604-734-9200

If you approach the main entrance to Granville Island, under the Granville Street Bridge,  turn right at the four-way stop onto Lamey’s Mill Road.  Our building, Harbour Terrace, is the second entrance-way on your left.  Park wherever you find a spot and proceed up a flight of stairs, walk around the west side of building and you will see our patio, (about half way down building), with a sign, #20, Island Inn, with a cat on it, and make yourselves comfortable!

If approaching from the East, (Cornerbrook, Winnipeg, Hope, Main Street, Cambie Bridge, etc.), follow West 4th until Alder Crossing.  At these lights, turn right and once over the bridge above the railway tracks, left at three-way stop onto Lamey’s Mill Road.  Harbour Terrace is one entrance-way past Dean’s Store, on your right, as you travel West on Lamey’s Mill Road.  Follow the same direzzzzzzzione as above to gain access to The Island Inn.  Buona Fortuna!

                           Cheers, Cora Lee & Patrizio!

I'm planning to do the SP loop tomorrow a.m. - SW at 7:30 and then onwards. Anyone interested?

Hi Marcus Aurelius et al!

I'm off to the Folk Fest. Have seen some truly wonderful performers so far. I suggest you head to Jericho after Stanley Park. You can hear and see a great deal even from outside the fence, beachside. Browse the Hippie Market as well.  Cheers, Il Conduttore!

So Calgary Stampede winds down. I had a really great day at the Stampede--no I didn't buy tickets to the Rodeo or the Chuckwagon races.
I got there at 9 in the morning and went straight to the Saddledome to watch the Stock dog competition--dogs who are trained to work livestock. In this case, one dog, one handler, three ship to take around a prescribed course ending in an 8x8 pen. Really great to watch those dogs work. Dogs from Australia, Wales, Scotland, Canada etc.
I went from their to Blacksmith competition: semi finalists had 60 minutes to shoe hind hooves on real horses. Remove old shoes. Clean and prepare the hooves, filing, trimming, measuring, then manufacturing the horseshoe from a far of regular stock steal. Amazing to watch the talent at work.
Then back to the Saddledome for cattle penning competition: three riders on cutting horses, 30 heifers all numbered, the competition to cut out three numbered animals from the herd and get them penned in a 12x12 pen. It took them 30 sec to 3 min.
Of course I took time out for a corndog and lemonade.
On to other stuff.

-- Jan's daughter Emily is coming back to IronMan Canada at Penticton Aug 26. This will be her third time in this competition, but she has also done IronMan in Germany, England, Lake Placet. She ran the NY marathon last Nov. Anyway you get the picture that she likes this stuff. I think she would be glad to get her Penticton time down under 12:15. Anyway it will be good to hang out for a couple of days and give her some support.
--I am going to drive out early--probably leaving The Hat about Aug 12 or so. I haven't figured an itinerary--but stops in Vancouver and Duncan are absolutely required with options for Victoria, Kaslo, Trail.
I would then meet Jan in Penticton and we would drive back to Calgary about Aug 27-28.
I know you folks have indicated your various plans for the month--how have plans shaped up for your and what dates around then might fit into your social calendars?
I say farewell to Cochrane on July 31 and take possession of my townhouse in The Hat the next day. Leroy Angle, minister retired, has talked me in to applying to job share with him a 10 month appt at a church in the Hat. Half time sounds about right to me, and Leroy and I worked three years together my last MH gig. We'll see what happens.
