IIDD, Moondance: Wednesday, October 24th

Death destroys the body, as the scaffolding is destroyed after the building is up and finished. And he whose building is up rejoices at the destruction of the scaffolding and of the body. -Leo Tolstoy, novelist and philosopher (1828-1910)

elgooG

About ten years ago, someone put up a parody "mirror image" of Google's search engine called "elgooG," showing everything Google shows but in reverse. (The site is still up at elgoog.im.) In September of 2002, New Scientist discovered that the joke site had a practical, serious use -- Chinese users could access it in spite of government censorship, and therefore, search the web using Google (given some proficiency in reading text backwards). The powers that be, for some reason (probably ignorance of elgooG's existence), had not blocked the service.

Pat,

Thank you for the malting last night. As predicted the west wind found me heading home. I felt like I was dragging one of those Spanish cherry wood barrels behind the bike.

Contrary to my assertions last night, my only window of opportunity is to ride this morning -- I need to be back by 11:30. I will ride at 9:00 – 9:30 if anyone cares to join me. W

Just picked up your e-mail, George, and it looks pretty nasty out there, so I think I'll wait for some nicer weather.
Ray
Ray,

Tomorrow looks like it may be better weather. How does your schedule look? G

George,
Should be clear tomorrow until early afternoon, so a 9:30 to 10:00 start would suit me. Ray
Hi Lads!

I'm swimming today so a ride domani would be terrific. I'm free whenever best suits the peleton! Let me know about route/timing. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Pics: How Whirlygig and I spend our time when not cycling! Macallan tasting last night at the Ecclectic Howl, (Electric Owl), on Main near Viaduct. Didn't even need to drop a handkerchief, babes just flocked to our table, even before the smart young men joined the grizzled brigade!

PS: Giorgio, glad Kerry liked Cowichan sweater! Looks grand!!!

Patrick,

Thank you very much for all the time and hard work and commitment you invested as a volunteer for the 2012 Vancouver Writers Fest! By all accounts the festival was a huge success. We really could not have done it without you!
While the festival and your volunteer shifts are still fresh in your mind, we would love your feedback!
What did you enjoy, what was challenging, what are your suggestions for improvements?

Feedback this year is being gathered by an on-line survey. It takes only a few minutes and will help us plan for our 2013 festival. Please be assured that all information will be kept confidential.

Every completed survey will be entered into a draw at the Volunteer Party on Thursday evening Nov 1, for a pair of Arts Club tickets to "Ride the Cyclone", an Arts Club production which plays at the Granville Island Stage Jan 17-Feb 18. The Globe and Mail described it as "Probably the most uproarious and outrageous piece of musical theatre Canada has ever produced." The pair of tickets is worth $98.

Here's the link to the on-line survey. Please submit as soon as possible!

Hi Glasgow!

Sorry I've not been in touch but have very busy with VWF, just finished on Sunday. Trust your trip east went well. Thought that you might consider retiring earlier after reading this:

THE GYNECOLOGIST WHO BECAME A MECHANIC

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO
paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where
skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic.

He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes,
attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time of the
practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for
weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results
came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of
150%.

Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, "I don’t want to
appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if
there is an error in the grade?"

"The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart
perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine
back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."
After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50% because
you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done in my
entire career".

Rebelle, (War Witch)
Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: How Whirlygig and I spend our time when not cycling! Very, very pleasant Macallan tasting, (Free, of all things!), last night at the Ecclectic Howl, (Electric Owl), on Main near Viaduct. Babes just flocked to our table, even before the smart young men joined the grizzled brigade! Funnily enough, Mike, beside Giorgio, is the accountant at GIB and knows Chloƫ well! We were chatting before being seated and discovered connection! On the malt front, just picked up two bottles of the "Shackleton" malt. In case you haven't heard about it:

Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt is a meticulous re-creation of the original malt whisky shipped to Antarctica in 1907 by the explorer Ernest Shackleton to fortify his 'Nimrod' expedition. The story of how several wooden crates of this precious whisky were abandoned to the Antarctic winter in early 1909, then rediscovered over a century later, is one that celebrates the enduring spirit of both man and malt.

Stopped at Legacy this afternoon, after watching Rebelle, (War Witch), at Vancity Theatre, one of the films brought back from VIFF. A terribly difficult film about child soldiers in sub-Saharan Africa. Nevertheless, simply superb performances by everyone, especially Rachel Mzwanza, as Komona, the "sorceress" to the rebel chief, the Great Tiger. A mesmerizing drama "about the remarkable endurance of the human spirit."

Ray, Works for me. G

Glasgow will be chortling – which is probably not much different from how he speaks.

I will leave it to Ray to suggest both the starting gate and the time.

Bring the Shackleton Malt. We can have that instead of the lattes. W

Gents,
After looking at those photos, I may have to take up drinking.
We should be OK for weather in the morning. How about 9:30 at King Ed. and Maple for an Iona or Steveston spin with the addition of a UBC circuit for any wishing to top up their kilometers? I'm sure we could team up with Mark and Al at the Canada Line if they are available. Ray
Hi Guys,

Let me know what your ride plan is, I was going to go to Colleen's class but weather permitting I would possibly be up for a ride instead, Thanks, Al
Gentlemen,
Please let me know your proposed route and time - I may be able to join you for at least part of the ride.
8^) cheers, Mark

Suggest that the Vancouverites meet the Burnaby lads at 10am Canada Line Bridge. Flexible if anybody wants to change the meeting spot. Ray
Hello Fellow Peletonians!

I agree with Raymondo, 10:00-10:15am, (Vancouverites will leave by 10:15am if Burnaboids don't show by then or have not made contact with Giggster on his dumb phone!), at the CSTB, with Iona to follow! We can discuss other possibilities en route! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
